AZuR partner Hofdmann Runderneuerungstechnik GmbH from Wittmund is expanding its service range. In addition to its established cold retreading service, the company will now also offer hot retreading of truck tyres. Following the extension of its existing ECE R109 approval, the company is already producing and marketing the first hot-retread commercial vehicle tyres.
Greater Flexibility For Different Areas of Application
With this step, Hofdmann further expands its expertise as a specialist in tyre retreading while strengthening the tyre circular economy in Germany. The company has been a member of the AZuR network for several years and actively contributes its extensive experience in retreading, tyre repair, and casing management.
While cold retreading is widespread, particularly in the commercial vehicle sector, hot retreading offers additional possibilities for certain tyre designs and applications. Both processes pursue the same goal: to keep high-quality casings in the product cycle for as long as possible and to maintain their material value over multiple life cycles.
The expansion of the production program demonstrates that companies continue to invest in retreading and strategically expand existing capacities. This not only strengthens the industry’s competitiveness but also increases the availability of retreaded tyres for fleets and commercial users.
Retreading As A Building Block Of The Tire Circular Economy
Retreading is a key component of a functioning tyre circular economy. Specialist retreading companies carefully inspect suitable premium casings after their initial use and fit them with a new tread. This significantly extends the service life of high-quality tyres before they are sent for mechanical tyre recycling or, if technically necessary, further recycling processes at the end of their life cycle.
“Every investment in retreading strengthens the European tyre circular economy,” explains Christina Guth, network coordinator of the Alliance for the Future of Tires (AZuR). “By expanding its hot retreading capabilities, Hofdmann is broadening its offering and creating additional opportunities to keep high-quality commercial vehicle casings in circulation for longer. This sends an important signal to the entire industry.”
AZuR Focuses on Expanding Retreading in Europe
The expansion of production capacity at Hofdmann aligns with the AZuR network’s current activities. AZuR recently launched a European project group on retreading to better connect companies, research institutions, and other stakeholders along the value chain and to jointly shape the future of retreading.
With around 90 network partners, AZuR develops solutions to keep tyres in use for as long as possible and then recover the valuable raw materials they contain. Hofdmann’s investment shows that retreading will remain an important part of this development.
