The North American Tire & Retread show also attracts retreaders from the Caribbean islands, who are looking for new equipment as well as tyre brands to further expand their offerings in the local market. Chinese tyre brands targeting the North, Central and South American markets exhibiting in large number were also looking for new partners to open sales channels in these markets.
“It is an interesting show for us, the retread equipment makers are showcasing new technology. We are also planning to get into new tyre sales. We may work with some of them in the future,” said Kenry Jackson, General Manager, Jamaica Ultimate Tyre Co Ltd. The company is one of the biggest retreaders in Jamaica, retreading around 12,000 tyres annually at its Kingston based plant.
Jamaica Ultimate is upgrading its plant with the installation of a monorail system in the next quarter. “We are also looking for an electronic buffer, which we would install after the completion of the monorail,” Jackson added. In addition, the Jamaican retreader is also scouting for a shearography machine for its plant. “We have plans to install one and we are searching for a right one for our plant. Currently, we are doing visual evaluation of casings and a shearography would improve our tyre inspection capabilities,” Jackson said. The firm retreads tyres with Vipal tread rubber.
