REMADE Institute Launches Funding Call to Advance Tyre Reuse and Retreading in New York State

The REMADE Institute, a division of the Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Alliance (SMIA) Corp., has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to support projects that increase the beneficial use of scrap or end-of-life tyres (ELT) generated in New York State; an innovative approach to both retreading and recycling development in the tyre industry.

New York Tackling Waste Tyres

The RFP, launched as part of the New York State (NYS) Waste Tire Program, seeks proposals to develop or demonstrate technologies that enhance tyre reuse, remanufacturing, retreading, and recycling. REMADE was selected by the New York State Department of Economic Development to administer the programme earlier this year.

Two competitive grant streams are available under the initiative. Technology Development projects will fund research and development activities that establish or improve processing technologies for ELT. In contrast, Technology Demonstration projects will support pre-commercial trials of technologies that are ready for market deployment.

Grants under the Technology Development programme will cover up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs, with a maximum award of USD 250,000. Technology Demonstration projects may receive up to 80 per cent of eligible expenses, also capped at USD 250,000. Multi-year projects of up to three years will be accepted.

Proposals are invited from industry, academia and non-profit organisations, including small businesses. Projects must also have an end-user partner to validate product quality and market acceptance.

Technologies considered for the programme include those that promote tyre reuse or retreading, reduce processing costs, or improve the performance of recycled tyre products. Eligible concepts range from new approaches to tyre-derived fuels and crumb rubber to innovations in AI-driven process control, pyrolysis, and advanced methods for addressing ELTs. Proposals aimed at improving retreading efficiency and reducing production costs are explicitly encouraged. Projects that do not advance sustainability, including landfilling, incineration, or purely policy-driven studies, will not be considered.

Proposals must be submitted through the REMADE Institute website by November 17, 2025, where additional information is also available.
