The AZuR Network has been recognised in the C2C/Recycling category of the German Award for Sustainability Projects 2026 for its “Retreading: Climate Protection on Wheels” project. The project aims to increase tyre retreading in Germany and across Europe by extending the useful life of suitable tyre casings.
AZuR Success Recognised
A life cycle assessment commissioned by AZuR and conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT compared retreaded tyres with equivalent new tyres. Under the conditions examined, producing a retreaded truck tyre generated about 135 kilogrammes less greenhouse gas emissions, a reduction of more than 60 per cent.
The award jury highlighted the project’s potential for wider adoption and its relevance to the industry. Award documentation also cited the integration of retreading into policy discussions, including its confirmation under the EU taxonomy in 2025.
Knauf took first place in the C2C/Recycling category for its circular gypsum supply chain, while Schmitz Cargobull led the Mobility and Logistics Solutions category. The awards, presented by DISQ with ntv and DUP UNTERNEHMER under the patronage of Brigitte Zypries, received 433 nominations. Forty-six organisations were recognised across 19 categories at the ceremony in Berlin on 17 September.
“This award belongs to our entire network,” said Christina Guth, AZuR Network Coordinator. “Retreading only works when many stakeholders collaborate along the value chain, from certified end-of-life tyre recyclers, tyre manufacturers, and retreaders to retailers, fleet operators, and academia. The award highlights the potential of using high-quality tyres for longer and keeping their casings in circulation.
