Carter's Tyres May Expand Further in South Canterbury
Apollo Creates Go The Distance Playgrounds for Indian Village Children

Apollo Tyres have inaugurated two tyre playgrounds near Chennai, in the southern part of India. These playgrounds have been created for the children of Senakuppam and Vallakottai villages, just outside Chennai using end-of-life tyres (ELT). working towards tackling this issue of discarded tyres. From expanding our retreading footprint, to the launch of Go The Distance pitch in Old Trafford, UK, and now these play structures, all showcase ways we have been working towards the reuse or recycling of discarded tyres.”
Each of these playgrounds has been created using nearly 200 radial tyres,
New Zealand’s Carter's Tyres Chief executive Gary Carter visited the chain’s new Washdyke shop recently where he announced another new tyre shop and plans to expand a retreading plant as part of the national chain's expansion in South Canterbury.
Carter said the company's Temuka tyre retreading factory might need to hire five extra workers "soon", months after it began retreading truck tyres in what Carter said was New Zealand's largest tyre-curing chamber. Carter said business at the new factory had developed faster than expected.
It was possible the company would add a service outlet to its Temuka operation. Carter said the company might also open an outlet in Oamaru, but did not have specific plans about when that might happen.
Carter said the company had attracted some of the new
Washdyke shop's four staff from several local tyre companies, including the Timaru branch of Independent Tyre Services (ITS), which closed in March after 50 years. The new Washdyke branch's manager, Neil MacGregor, had worked for ITS for 23 years before the new branch opened a month ago.
Carter said although staff were particularly hard to find in Christchurch, where workers could get "good money doing nothing", the firm had managed to find southern staff for "a physically hard job".
Carter believed his company had managed to expand despite competition from overseas companies by competing on service.

Commenting on the playgrounds, Sharma said; “As per research commissioned by us, very soon India will have 100 million+ end-of-life tyres every year, without proper mechanisms in place to recycle or dispose of these tyres. As a responsible company, we have been
under the company’s umbrella environment initiative, Habitat Apollo. Depending on the success of this pilot project of creating play structures using worn-out tyres, the company will look at replicating it at multiple locations across the country, with the villages around Apollo Tyres’ manufacturing facilities, as the first targets.
