Ahmedabad Tyre Dealer to Foray into Retreading in 2016
An Ahmedabad based tyre dealer is planning to foray into the retreading industry shortly. The firm is an authorised dealer of JK, Apollo, Bridgestone and Continental brands and also deals in Chinese tyres. “We have been in the business of tyre retailing for the past six years and have been growing steadily, selling around 2,500 tyres per month,” said Inderpal Singh Ahuja of New Punjab Tyres.
The tyre dealer was visiting Tyrexpo India in Chennai looking for retreading machinery for a tyre retread plant it plans to open in Ahmedabad. “We are
planning to open a plant that would retread 800 to 1000 tyres per month in the beginning,” stated Ahuja. “Our idea is to make a one-stop-shop from new tyre sourcing to retreading.”
The plant is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2016. Commenting on the retreading scenario, Ahuja said, “There is lot of scope in the Indian retreading market, the people are increasingly becoming aware of the benefits of retreading. We have realised that trucking companies in India are now looking for retreaders that provide good quality retreading.”
    Rajiv Nair of Radhakrishnan Tyres
Ankeleshwar (Gujarat) based retreader Radhakrishnan Tyres, is in the process of modernising its plant and says it will be investing in a new electric chamber from Coimbatore equipment maker Glisen within the next 2-3 months. The plant currently runs on a steam autoclave.
The Omni distributor is also focusing on truck tyre repairing and will soon install a truck tyre on-spotter for repairing, vulcanising and patching work. “Elgi has a compact tyre repair station, operational by single person, and we are planning to buy one shortly,” said Rajiv Nair of Radhakrishnan Tyres.
The company retreads around 200 tyres per month as it focuses mainly on cash business, preferring this mode of operation to giving long term credits to transporters. “We have a clean business with no outstanding debts in the market, that’s the reason our volumes are low. We are content with current volumes,” said Nair.
The company used to retread 1,500 tyres around 15 years ago, travelling up to Maharashtra, collecting tyres, retreading and delivering in three days, but over the years competition became intense and retreaders started offering long term credit to truckers to attract business. Radakrishnan sources tread from United Rubber, Teesons and Midas. “We are sourcing three brands and offer to retread with different rubber depending on the clients budget,” said Nair.
