Michelin Unveils NAZCA Automated Regrooving Machine

–

Michelin has revealed NAZCA, an automated regrooving system designed to modernise a key element of vehicle maintenance, at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover.

Automated Regrooving

Regrooving is a long-established part of truck, bus, and coach tyre maintenance, but the process has remained largely manual, making it time-consuming and dependent on the skill of individual technicians.

NAZCA automates the regrooving process in line with manufacturers’ recommendations, with the aim of improving quality, reliability, and repeatability.

The regrooving machine was developed by Michelin engineers. Using a high-resolution laser scanner and advanced algorithms, the system can measure tyres, model deformation and wear patterns, and continuously control cutting depth. As the geometry of each tyre is unique, NAZCA adjusts the cutting depth across the full width and circumference of the tyre in real time. Michelin says this enables operators to make more effective use of the tyre’s remaining tread depth, while helping to extend working life and reduce total cost of ownership.

NAZCA has been tested in real-world conditions for more than a year and is designed to increase the number of regrooving operations completed by workshops. According to Michelin, the system could increase regrooving capacity by 30% to 50%, depending on workshop operating conditions.

Each regrooving operation requires less than three minutes of hands-on time, allowing technicians to focus on other tasks, such as alignment, repairs, and tyre installation or removal. Michelin says this could also help workshops address the shortage of skilled labour in the sector.

Designed for workshop use, NAZCA is compatible with a wide range of tyre brands and sizes, provided the casing is suitable for the regrooving process.

Approximately 20 NAZCA machines are currently undergoing pilot testing across Europe. Michelin plans to continue rolling out the system in several countries in 2027, with a gradual commercial launch adapted to the specific characteristics of each market.

NAZCA will be on display on the Michelin stand at IAA Transportation in Hannover from 14 to 20 September 2026.
